Linked animated gifs

I noticed linked animated gifs work on your site. What did you do to allow this to work? Small gifs work but larger ones give an x image. I tried posting on xenforo and was getting the same error that I was getting. Any ideas?

This gif wont display on xenforos site.

 
I haven't done anything special.

The only thing I DON'T use that the XF site does is the Image Proxy.

 
Checking a little deeper, I also don't have the Imgur media type enabled in the BB Code media sites. But that should not affect anything so far as using the "Insert image" button in the editor.
 
It's definitely the image proxy causing the broken image.
 
I turned it off and it now works. Iam not sure about turning it off on my larger site, both are enabled.
